Membership Categories

There are three categories of membership:

Eligibility Criteria

To become a Pre-Registration Member of the ICPM, you MUST have:

  1. An undergraduate honours degree (or equivalent) in the physical sciences suitable for membership of the Institute of Physics (IOP).
  2. A postgraduate degree in Medical Physics or equivalent
  3. Either of the following:
    1. Completed an approved training programme in medical physics (min. 2 years) as per the European recommendations for Medical Physics Expert (MPE)
    2. Demonstrated equivalence in training in your chosen speciality area by providing details of your work experience and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) over a minimum of an initial 2-year period.
  4. Be on a pathway of Advanced Experience Training with the goal of achieving Expert Member registration on completion.

To become an Expert Member of the ICPM, you MUST have:

  1. An undergraduate honours degree (or equivalent) in the physical sciences suitable for membership of the Institute of Physics (IOP).
  2. A postgraduate degree in Medical Physics or equivalent
  3. Either of the following:
    1. Completed an approved training programme in medical physics (min. 2 years) as per the European recommendations for Medical Physics Expert (MPE)
    2. Demonstrated equivalence in training in your chosen speciality area by providing details of your work experience and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) over a minimum of an initial 2-year period.
  4. An additional 3 years’ Advanced Experience Training in clinical medical physics.
  5. Be currently working as a clinical medical physicist.

Specialist Areas

Members may initially register for one specialist area. After five years of full membership, a second specialist area may be added, with evidence that the member has attained suitable competence in the additional area.
There are three specialist areas:

1. Diagnostic Radiology and Imaging Physics

2. Therapeutic Applications of Ionising Radiation

3. Clinical Diagnostics and Therapeutics

To apply for membership of ICPM, click the APPLY ONLINE button below and complete the form.

Before you start, please make sure you have the following documents to hand as you will be asked to upload them as part of your application:

  1. Proof of ID – copy of passport or driving license (certified by an authorised person)
  2. Evidence of your undergraduate degree (certified by an authorised person)
  3. Evidence of your postgraduate degree (certified by an authorised person)
  4. Training certificate as evidence of approved training programme OR detailed CV outlining equivalent work experience
  5. Evidence of current work as a clinical medical physicist (using this form)
  6. Letters of support from two ICPM members/fellows (using this form)

Once your application is submitted, the following will happen:

  • You will receive an automated email from us to confirm that your application has been received.
  • Your application will be reviewed to ensure it is fully complete and includes the required documentation to demonstrate your competence in your chosen specialty. We may contact you if additional information is required.
  • You will be informed by email if your application is successful. This email will contain a link to create your password.
  • After you create your password, you will be directed to a login page which will bring to the Members Area on this website.
  • When you login for the first time, you will be prompted to enter your payment details for the membership fee. The fee is €50 per annum and will be automatically charged to your credit/debit card on the 1st of January each year (regardless of which month you join).
  • Once you’ve paid, you will have full access to all the features of the Members Area, including the CPD portal.

  • You will receive an automated email from us shortly to confirm that your initial application has been received.
  • You will then receive a subsequent email with a link to create your password.
  • After you create your password, you will be directed to a login page which will bring to the Members Area on this website.
  • When you login for the first time, you will be prompted to enter your payment details for the first year’s membership fee (€50).
  • Once you’ve paid, you will be given 30 days to submit evidence of your 3 years of advanced experience training. To submit this evidence, go to your dashboard, select CPD and enter your evidence under Category 3 CPD.
  • Once you have completed this step, and clicked the submit button, your application will be forwarded to the assessment committee for consideration at their next sitting.
